Washington Youth Tour representatives look ahead

AREA’s new Youth Tour director, Laura Stewart, joined 25 other YT representatives at NRECA this month to look ahead to this year’s event, which will be June 10-16, 2016. Eighteen Alabama co-ops will participate this year.

A change this year will be at National Youth Day, where all student participants get to learn about the history of the electric cooperatives and see how important it is for them to be a part of our democracy. Speakers motivate the young people, and they get to make friends with their peers – 1,600 of them!

Because of the sheer size of Youth Day, directors will split the event into two days to better manage the group.

The directors also discussed adding a humanitarian component to the last night’s dinner/dance – an option for the young people to learn more about volunteerism or participate in an activity that promotes a worthy cause or nonprofit group.
